elfURL™ is an open source application written using Ruby on Rails. This very simple tool is used to shorten long URLs that might break if used in an email. The program also provides click-through statistics (delivered via RSS) and allows users to add rel-tags conforming to the Microformats standard. Used in conjunction with complex eCommerce applications (such as Amazon), elfURL can turn a URL such as:

http://www.amazon.com/Long-Tail-Future-Business-
Selling/dp/1401302378/ref=sr_1_5/102-6548728-2866543?
ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173382981&sr=8-5

and turn it into:

http://elfurl.com/vinaf

We operate elfURL as a free web service. We have also released the elfURL code using the GNU General Public License. Feel free to download the code, customize and/or incorporate it into your own application or website. If you improve the code please remember to upload your changes to the SVN.

Project History
  • elfURL was developed using agile programming techniques built in less than four days, released publicly in July 2005. Since then the tool has created more than 4,000,000 URLs. Big in Japan can help you incorporate the code into your application or website or you can download the code and do so yourself. Have fun!
