ShopSavvy on Windows Mobile Update
The Windows Mobile version of ShopSavvy is on hold indefinitely. I wouldn’t expect a Windows Mobile version of ShopSavvy until sometime next year. Here is the story:
Late this summer we put EVERYTHING on hold and worked to build a Windows Mobile version of ShopSavvy for the Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Marketplace launch. Our friends at Microsoft offered us a slot as the feature app for the major launch event – many of which never ended up occurring. We completed ShopSavvy, but at the 11th hour we learned of a requirement that was never documented or explained to us – the need for SQL Server CE to be included in ShopSavvy. It is a long technical story, but basically we needed to compile an installer for our installer. In other platforms such as Android and iPhone all applications share a database – each application using it as necessary. On Windows Mobile each application must include its own database SERVER (not just a client) requiring 2MB of space. Nightmare. This will be resolve in a future release of Windows Mobile. In the meantime the coding effort required to add this functionality to ShopSavvy would have delayed our iPhone release even further and we decided we had to release prior to Black Friday.

OH NO! next year? i was so looking for this app soon

Ahh man, that sucks, could you give out the one you have now as cab (for us with winmo and sql) not via windows market place and then keep working on the one with SQL
Comment by James — November 22, 2009 @ 11:48 am
+1 for a cab release! Need that WinMob love!
Comment by Matt — November 22, 2009 @ 12:25 pm
I second James’s idea. We don’t need Marketplace to get apps, why not release the cab so we can do it ourselves?
Comment by Mke C — November 23, 2009 @ 5:37 am
What will ShopSavvy use as a database?
Comment by amuse — November 23, 2009 @ 10:02 am
I have to throw in with the rest, I am an Android fan, but in October my G1 was stolen and I have not been able to replace it. My wife has a Touch Pro II that is begging for this before Black Friday. If the CAB is available, please release it if possible – as Beta testers during this holiday season we could really help with feedback. Everything said, I do need to tell you one important thing … great app. Even if it doesn’t make it to WinMo you guys still rock.
Comment by Thomas Brown — November 24, 2009 @ 5:42 pm
I agree with everyone. Release a version now, I’m sure there are plenty willing to use it as is!
Comment by Chris — November 24, 2009 @ 6:31 pm
Just got my a new WinMo phone / contract. M$ has so many delays in it’s own products shipment, now they’re affecting 3rd party application! If I could painlessly dump this phone, it would be gone!
Please release a .cab version…
Comment by Frank — November 25, 2009 @ 11:56 am
We hear you… We will post it on the site as soon as it is available (regardless of whether or not it is in the store).
Comment by amuse — November 25, 2009 @ 12:11 pm
Oh, time to put my purtty Touch Pro 2 back in the box for the holidays. My G1 was getting lonely anyways.
Gobble Gobble everybody!!!
Comment by DK Brorthers — November 25, 2009 @ 5:04 pm
Oh, I agree with everyone else. Releasing a .cab version for everyone would be great! I really hope a .cab version will be released.
Comment by Brian Del Rosario — November 27, 2009 @ 5:34 pm
We will release a .cab as soon as we have one that will work.

Ok, what’s the problem of an installer being 2MB bigger than expected? Is there any size limit on Windows Marketplace? If it’s only the time for a download, then it shouldn’t be a big issue…
Comment by TePe — December 1, 2009 @ 7:57 am
I don’t understand why many developer houses won’t write for Window Mobile unless the program is sold in MarketPlace. To name two places where you can sell your application there is Handango and HandMark. There are many other sites available for selling programs. Whn you look at these online stores you start to realize that the window mobile phones has a very rich assortment of programs.
That is the advantage to windows. You are not forced to sell in only one store. Not to mention the application will run on the card and multiple processes are allowed.
There is absolutely no reason to delay this launch.
Comment by Larry — December 1, 2009 @ 7:46 pm
Hi there. I work in the Windows Mobile team and would like to extend some assistance to help you get over the hurdle you’re experiencing. Please send me a mail and I’ll work with you to get your application out the door.
hope to hear from you soon.

+1 on the please release without waiting for Marketplace. There are many of us who are used to buying/downloading from handango, handmark, mobihand, etc…, as well as direct from vendors like spb, webis, sprite, etc… Please don’t let Microsoft get in the way of itself, and let us show you the love of people forced to use a product (like us corporate wage slaves told to use WinMo) who then find it actually being good.
Comment by Stew — December 2, 2009 @ 12:29 pm
Really looking forward to getting my hands on this app.
Please please release a cab outside of marketplace.

The issue is more related to 6.5 than their marketplace. After the holidays we will get something released.

I am a winmo user on a us cellular htc touch pro 2 I would love to have this on my phone but I am glad you released it to the Iphone first Windows/M$ is always trying to put to many people through the rings. M$ needs to learn to make it easier for people to better there product then trying to control it all. Skipp M$ as much as you can and deliver a .cab or other manner I would rather pay you then M$ You did the work.
Comment by Corey Brown — December 4, 2009 @ 2:19 am
BTW: Mike J. Francis of the Windows Mobile team had made some code available that can guide some one through this scenario.

Also agree with releaseing a CAB version for those who can install stuff themselves and know how to configure SQL CE. And for the person who asked if there is a size limit on Windows Marketplace, installers must be 10MB or smaller.
Comment by AJ — December 5, 2009 @ 9:00 pm
+1 on releasing a cab outside Marketplace.
Let m$ figure out how they are screwing things up when we purchase from other places.
I was waiting for the application to be released on WinMo for so long and hope to see you guys on WinMo soon!

Please I beg of you Please release a useable version for WinMo… I got a WinMo 6.5 understanding it would be able for use. Now I am very discouraged. I should of got the HTC Hero from sprint but unfortunatly they were going to try to force me to upgrade my service plan. But they told me I could get this Samsung Intrepid with WinMo 6.5 and that ShopSavvy woudl be able on it….. well it’s not so PLEASE release a useable version. I Love This App!
Comment by KC — December 11, 2009 @ 4:35 pm
I would also like to see this as a .cab…. I have been waiting for this for a little over a year since I bought my fuze. Thanks for all of your efforts
Comment by Alan-X — December 12, 2009 @ 4:17 am
I’m (of course) with the users requesting a cab. I understand if you cannot do that for whatever reason or if it’s not complete because of their Marketplace requirements, but I just wanted to make sure to throw my hat in the ring because this is quite possibly the only app I want for my phone – lol. A co-worker turned me on to it and seriously this is the app I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR. Thank you for reading and may you have a blessed holiday
Comment by David King — December 12, 2009 @ 7:06 am
Yes! Please release the cab. Ignore the useless marketplace
Comment by Jack Chu — December 16, 2009 @ 8:58 pm

Comment by David King — December 18, 2009 @ 8:14 am
I would love to be notified when a cab or installer is available for windows mobile.
Comment by Joe — December 18, 2009 @ 8:25 am
Are you kidding? Just release it to handngo.com, pocketgear.com or handmark.com! Why would you need to release this on wm market place? There are only like 30 apps in that useless store anyway. Most wm users already buy from the above stores and ignore marketplace since they take so damn long to release anything new (Or rather a developer to release something new there). Thats why windows mobile is better than the other platforms; you do NOT need MS approval to sell your app, and the users do not void warranty to use your app.
Comment by Conrad M — December 20, 2009 @ 10:59 am
Any update on a .cab file?
Comment by Buller — December 21, 2009 @ 4:42 am

Comment by Jack Chu — December 22, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
Wonderful news on the potential release date. This is really needed in the WinMo universe.
It’s obvious that cross development between consumer-based and business-based platforms is happening. (ie – Good Tech for Android and iPhone)
Good to see that WinMo is getting a little love.
Comment by Mark A — December 23, 2009 @ 7:53 am
Yes I agree that this needs to be released ASAP!!! I’ve wanted this app since I first read about it and I think it’s only fair that WM gets some love to or at least the users of WM!! I hope that with all of these requests for it or at least a .cab form for us to try/test til final is released would be nice and appreciated!!! There’s def. a high demand for it so to not release it or get it out soon is only foolish… I’m really excited to see that even Loke reached out to you guys, hopefully that helps big time and show you how much WM wants your app!!! Happy New Years and hopefully this gets released sooner then later!!

Alexander Muse,
I believe the last official message states the program for Windows Mobile will be out by the end of Jan. Some time has gone by since working on building the application. Can you state whether you will be delaying or possibly beat the suggested timeline? Thank you
Comment by Larry Young — January 1, 2010 @ 3:07 pm
Not sure about any sort of official statement. Our company is relatively small and various issues can have a big impact on timelines. We had hoped to release our WinMo version with 6.5, but for a number of reasons we missed the date. We have about two solid weeks of programming left to be able to launch. Our hope is to dedicate a couple of weeks in January or February to finish the application. Right now we are stabilizing our iPhone version. We are also completing our PayPal integration. Those two items are the highest priority, but as soon as we get two solid weeks free we will finish ShopSavvy for WinMo. Sadly, it may only work on HTC phones at first and then Samsung. LG is a big question mark for us right now.
Comment by amuse — January 1, 2010 @ 3:22 pm
awesome to see some news about this as this app needs to give WM some love to!!! I really hope this gets the solid 2 weeks it needs and deserves and gets out the door so we can enjoy an use this app as we please and go nuts!!! I WANT THIS APP NOW!! PLEASE??? LOL
Comment by MrViZZiATO — January 2, 2010 @ 11:29 pm
Great news and thank you for responding. Often companies large and small believe silence is better than engaging in a conversation with users. It is easier to wait knowing this company is considerate to all users.
I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 and am willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement if you are lookng for beta testers.
Remember, while the iPhone recently beat out Window phones in numbers it is just recent. We represent a large group of smartphone users. When Mobile Win7 comes we will be a bigger force.
Comment by Larry — January 3, 2010 @ 12:39 pm
I downloaded it for my ipod touch temporarily. It’s so great – I have to type in the name but it is still awesome. Can’t wait to be able to use the barcode scanner
Comment by David King — January 4, 2010 @ 10:20 pm
Any new word on this app for WM?? I’m tired of hearing/seeing others using it and I cant =o(
Comment by MrViZZiATO — January 4, 2010 @ 10:58 pm
@MrViZZiATO So we have about two weeks of solid development to finish the app. We should get some time later this month or next month to finish it. We are in beta on the iPhone and our development has taken a little longer than we had hoped.
Comment by Alexander Muse — January 4, 2010 @ 11:02 pm
@Alexander Muse Thanks for personally getting back to me, thats really nice of you!! This app. needs to be out b/c there’s lot of WM users out there that will put this app to go use and not only that give you guys much more props!! =o) I hope you guys can get it out this month rather then later… I’m trying to be patient I really am lol… is there any way I can be a tester for you with what you guys have so far with this app??
Comment by MrViZZiATO — January 5, 2010 @ 1:46 am
I think they’re running a test the app for a night with your girlfriend and/or mom deal right now. But you have to sign a non disclosure agreement as well.. or is that a non discloth her? Baha!

Good to hear it is back on the list to get released. Also very glad to hear Microsoft has assigned someone to help with the release. I also would be willing to help with testing if you need. I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 on Verizon and can run either the WinMo 6.1 or 6.5 on it. I’m also an experienced software developer (including the WinMo platform) and have no problem with signing an NDA.

Switching to android now. However due to the lameness of this companies treatment to WM users, I will use one of the many competitors on this platform. This company sucks and should be boycotted for their lameness.
Comment by Conrad M — March 27, 2010 @ 10:42 am
Really people, be lucky that they are making this for the WM phones. They go where the market takes them. I my self am a WM phone user. Realize the WM phone is really made for bussines not really for this, same is said for the Palm, Android is for play and go, Nokia some where in between play and bussiness, and of course Apple’s Iphone is just a footnote in bussines but really made for play I for one am lookking forward for this software to come out. In a market that is based on popularity and money of course there will be a decission on when shopsavvy comes out for which phone maker first. So hopefully it will be comeing out this month. Fingers are crossed
